For Data-Center Operators and Tier1 / Tier2 IP Transit Providers

Noction’s Intelligent Routing Platform is ideal for Service Providers carrying IP Transit traffic in excess of hundreds of Gigabits. The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) that routes the Internet Traffic has come a long way from the days of the Gateway-to-Gateway Routing Protocol (GGP), but its inherent flaws are becoming more obvious as the IP transit traffic levels continue to rise to the tune of hundereds of Terabits per second.

Noction’s IRP is unique in that the platform adds a layer of intelligent to the “plain-vanilla” BGP Routing. If you are a Network Engineer, you must be aware of BGP’s best-path selection process.

BGP Decision Pavilion

Noction’s IRP adds these “metrics” to the standard BGP metrics: Latency, Packet Loss and Cost. If you see the BGP Path Selection process above, most of the time, the shortest AS-path is the metric that is used to choose the best path to a destination. So if a packet is destined for google.com through, say, Service Provider A which has a shorter AS-path but high packet-loss, the Quality-of-Experience for the users will suffer. Unfortunately, the conventional BGP is not going to be of much use in such a case and all traffic will follow the path to google.com through Service Provider A.
